Woodstock has two kinds of driveways, and they crack in different ways. Newer builds tend to crack first at the edges and where the asphalt meets the garage or sidewalk. Driveways on established streets often have long cracks down the middle that open a little more every winter.

Both are worth catching early, before water gets underneath and the freeze-thaw cycle starts breaking up the base.

Newer driveways: catch the first cracks

Even a driveway that’s only a few years old can start to crack. The edges usually go first, since they have the least support, followed by the joint where the asphalt meets concrete.

These cracks are small, which is exactly why they’re worth filling. Left open for a few winters, they let water into the base and the damage spreads from there.

Around the two-year mark is also the right time for a first sealcoat: cracks first, then sealer. Driveway sealcoating in Woodstock.

Older driveways: fill or repair?

On older driveways, the question is whether filling is still enough:

  • Straight cracks, even long ones, are usually good candidates for filling.
  • Spider-web cracking in one area usually means the base underneath is weak. Filling can slow it down, but a patch may be the better fix.
  • Holes and crumbling edges need pothole repair before anything else.

Chris will tell you honestly which one your driveway needs, even when the answer is the cheaper one.
