Why asphalt crack filling matters
Every big driveway problem starts as a small crack. Asphalt crack filling seals those cracks before water gets in, freezes, and turns a hairline crack into a pothole. It’s one of the cheapest ways to protect your driveway, and one of the most important.

What happens if you leave cracks open?
Rain and melting snow run into the crack and soak into the base under your asphalt. When that water freezes, it expands and pushes the crack wider. After a few winters, the edges start to crumble, the base gets soft, and the crack becomes a hole. Filling cracks early stops that cycle before it gets expensive.
Types of cracks we fill
- Hairline and surface cracks: small cracks that are easy to ignore, but they’re where water gets in first.
- Longer, straight cracks: often along the edges, down the middle, or where the driveway meets the garage or sidewalk.
- Spider-web cracking: lots of small connected cracks, sometimes called alligator cracking. It usually means the base underneath is weak. Filling can slow it down, but if it’s widespread, the area may need repair instead. Chris will tell you honestly which it is.
Our crack filling process
- Free on-site quote. Chris walks the driveway with you and gives you a clear price.
- Clean out the cracks. We remove dirt, weeds and loose material so the filler bonds to solid asphalt.
- Fill with the right crack filler. For commercial lots we use McAsphalt hot rubberized crack filler. For residential driveways we use quality cold-pour fillers. Both stay flexible and move with the asphalt as temperatures change.
- Smooth and finish. The fill is levelled with the surface for a tidy result.
- Ready to use. We’ll tell you when you can drive on it again.
Crack filling and sealcoating go together

When to fill cracks
Crack filling needs dry weather, but you can book your free quote any time of year. The best time is before winter, so late summer is ideal. That way the cracks are sealed before the first freeze. In spring, once the snow is gone, walk your driveway and look for new cracks. Catching them early keeps the job small.

How long does crack filling last?
It depends on the size of the crack and how much traffic the driveway gets. Filled cracks hold up well, but asphalt keeps moving, so new cracks can form over time. A quick check every spring keeps your driveway in good shape.
Can you fill cracks without sealcoating?
Yes. Crack filling can be done on its own. Many customers fill cracks one year and sealcoat the next.
Will the filled cracks be visible?
Yes, the filled lines are visible, since the filler is a different texture from the asphalt. If you want an even look, sealcoating over the top blends everything together.
Is it worth filling cracks on an old driveway?
If the base is still solid, yes. It can add years of life. If the driveway has widespread spider-web cracking or is breaking up, we’ll tell you honestly if repair is the better option.
